Bajta

Bajta sits at 988m on the Nock Range in southern Carinthia, a limestone ridge system between the Gurk Valley and Lavanttal. Reach it from Bad Eisenkappel in 3 hours via the Hochstuhl trail, or from Grades in 2.5 hours. The approach is straightforward hiking through mixed forest with steady elevation gain. This is compact hut territory—Bajta works as a base for ridge walks and scrambles across the Nocks rather than a destination in itself.
The hut sleeps 8 people in basic dormitory accommodation. Meals are available but book ahead—the keeper cooks only when guests are expected. Water and toilets are on-site. The season runs May to October, though opening dates depend on snow melt and weather. Winter climbing is possible if you're self-sufficient, but confirm conditions beforehand. This is working mountain shelter, not a tourist facility.
Call ahead to book. The hut fills on sunny weekends year-round and during school holidays. July and August need 2-3 weeks' notice. Shoulder season (May–June, September–October) is quieter but still reserve by phone a few days ahead. Expect to pay cash on arrival or arrange payment in advance with the keeper.
