Hochstadelhaus

Hochstadelhaus sits at 1,780m on the eastern flank of the Nockberge range in Carinthia. The hut anchors the Nockalmstrasse hiking circuit, a multi-day traverse of this limestone plateau. Most hikers approach from the south via the Brückelalm trail (2–3 hours) or from the north via Patergassen (2.5–3 hours). Both routes gain steady elevation through mixed forest before opening onto the alpine terrain around the hut. The location works as a base for day walks across the Nockberge saddles and peaks, or as a stage on longer routes connecting to other huts in the chain. The Nock peaks themselves—Hochnock (2,087m), Mirnock (2,110m)—are within reach as morning or afternoon ascents.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and offers 40 beds across mixed dormitories and a small number of double rooms. Half-board is standard: simple breakfasts and three-course dinners, with packed lunches available. The kitchen handles vegetarian and basic dietary requests if notified in advance. Water comes from the mountain spring. The hut typically opens from mid-May through late October, though the shoulder seasons (May, September–October) can bring sudden weather changes at this elevation. Winter closure is firm. Facilities include an outhouse-style toilet system and a small common room with woodstove.
Book Hochstadelhaus directly with the hut or through the OeAV website. July and August fill 6–8 weeks ahead, especially weekends. June and September offer better availability and more stable weather. Arrive with cash; the hut does not accept cards reliably.
