Watschiger Alm sits at 1625m in the Nockberge range of southern Carinthia. Reach it from the village of Bad Kleinkirchheim via the marked trail up the Gössering valley. The walk takes about 2.5 hours and gains 600m steadily through beech forest and open pasture. The hut is also accessible from the Nockalmstraße scenic road (toll required) via a shorter 30-minute walk, making it a reasonable car-free option for those with limited time.
The alm operates as a simple mountain inn serving walkers and cyclists. It has around 30 beds in basic double and dormitory rooms. Meals focus on regional Carinthian fare: kaiserschmarrn, Bosna, mountain cheese, and fresh trout. The kitchen supplies good coffee and substantial soups. Water comes from the property spring. Opening times depend on season—typically May through October, though confirm ahead as staffing varies. Toilet facilities are basic but functional.
Book directly by phone or email, especially for weekends June through September and during school holidays when the alm fills quickly. Most guests are day-trippers so overnight demand is moderate, but summer weekends do get busy. The hut is run by locals who prefer advance notice for larger groups. Winter access is unreliable; contact before planning any December-March visit.
