About

Badener Hütte sits at 2,608m on the southern slopes of the Rieserferner massif in East Tyrol. Reach it from the village of Kastelruth via the Ratschings valley. The standard approach takes 4 hours from Kastelruth, following marked trails through larch forest and alpine meadows. The hut serves as a base for traversing the Zillertal Alps and accessing peaks including Wilder Freiger. Alternative access exists from the Zillertal via longer approaches.
The hut offers 80 beds across dormitory and small private rooms. The kitchen serves full meals including evening menus and packed lunches. Water comes from a mountain spring. The hut operates from June through September, with weekends only in shoulder months. The OeAV manages the hut and maintains good relationships with the DAV. Solar panels provide power; the hut has no electricity grid connection. Mobile reception is sporadic. Toilets are composting; showers require advance notice.
Book directly by phone or email from April onwards, especially for July and August weekends when the hut fills 8–10 weeks ahead. The hut prefers calls in German but staff speak English. Credit cards are not accepted; bring cash (euros) or arrange bank transfer in advance. The approach is non-technical but involves significant elevation gain on narrow trails—full hiking boots are essential.
