Wangenitzseehütte

Wangenitzseehütte sits at 2,508m in the Defereggen Valley, a quiet corner of East Tyrol that most visitors skip. The hut overlooks the Wangenitz Lake, a small alpine lake ringed by meadow and scree. Reach it from the village of Hopfgarten in Defereggen in 2.5 hours on foot. The trail is well-marked and steady. You can also approach from the Taurer Jöchl pass if you're linking huts across the region.
The hut is modest—70 beds across several rooms, no private chambers. Meals are simple: a decent breakfast, packed lunches on request, and a three-course dinner with local beef and vegetables cooked fresh. The tap water runs cold and clean from the peak above. It's managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and opens mid-June through September. The hut keeper runs a tight operation. Expect basic mountain hut comfort: no wifi, no showers, pit toilets, and drying room for boots.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least one month ahead for July and August. The hut fills quickly on weekends. Weekday visits in June or September are far less crowded. If you're doing a longer traverse in the Defereggen or Zillertal, this hut works well as a quiet midpoint—you'll meet fewer people here than at the busier huts further west.
