Erlbachhütte

Erlbachhütte sits at 1,515m in the Berchtesgaden Alps south of Salzburg. Reach it from Marktschellenberg (Bavaria side) or via the Königssee valley approach. From Marktschellenberg village, the hut takes 2.5 hours on a well-marked trail through forest, gaining 600m steadily but without technical sections. This is the standard ascent for most parties. The hut also connects to longer ridge walks linking toward Hochkalter and the Schellenberg massif.
Erlbachhütte is run by the German Alpine Club (DAV) and offers 30 beds in dorm rooms. Meals are basic but adequate: hearty soups, schnitzel, and pasta feature regularly. The kitchen serves breakfast from 7:00 and evening meals from 18:00; order dinner the night before. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut operates year-round but has reduced staffing November to March, so ring ahead in winter. There's no electricity or heating beyond a wood stove in the communal room. Toilets are outside.

Winter weekends attract snowshoers, so book ahead then too. Arrive by 17:00 to secure a meal slot. The hut lies on DAV reciprocal territory, so DAV members get a 10–15% discount on bed rates.
