About
Kattowitzer Hütte sits at 2,320m on the Steinernes Meer plateau in the Salzburg Alps, between the Hochkönig massif and the limestone karst landscape. Reach it from Bad Reichenhall in Germany or from the Salzburg side via Schneizlreuth. The most straightforward approach is from Schneizlreuth (860m): allow 5–6 hours for the steep, occasionally scrambled 1,460m ascent on marked trails. From Bad Reichenhall the walk is longer but less steep, around 6–7 hours via the Eisalm. Both routes converge on the plateau. The hut can also be reached from the Hochkönig hut to the south in 3–4 hours across the Steinernes Meer.
The OeAV-managed hut has 40 beds across dormitory rooms. Meals are served daily: hearty dinners and substantial breakfasts, plus packed lunches available. The water supply comes from a fountain near the hut. The hut stays open from late May through early October. Conditions on the plateau are exposed; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Spring and autumn offer clearer, more stable weather.
Book accommodation directly with the hut from April onwards. July and August are busy; reserve at least 4–6 weeks ahead during these months. June and September are quieter alternatives. The hut takes phone and email bookings. Mobile reception is unreliable on the plateau, so confirm reservations well before arrival. Winter closure makes this a summer and shoulder-season destination only.
