Mahdegg Alpengasthof

Mahdegg Alpengasthof sits at 1209m in the Pinzgau region south of Zell am See. Reach it from the village of Zell am See by hiking 1.5 hours via the marked trail through mixed forest. The approach is steady and well-signposted, suitable for most hikers. You can also access it from Krimml to the south, which takes 2.5 hours of moderate hiking. The hut serves as a base for day walks into the surrounding hills and as a stop on longer traverses through the Pinzgau.
The hut offers 40 beds in simple rooms, mostly doubles and dormitory accommodation. Half-board is standard. The kitchen produces regional Austrian food; expect hearty soups, schnitzel, and local cheeses. Breakfast is buffet-style. The bar stays open to non-residents. Facilities include showers and toilets on each floor. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and may require enquiring ahead. The family-run atmosphere appeals to walkers and climbers using the hut as a base rather than a one-night stop.

The hut is not affiliated with a major Alpine club, so club members receive no discount. Arrive by early afternoon to secure good beds in dormitories.
