About

Schattbachalm sits at 1683m in the Loferer Steinberge range, 8km south of Wörgl in the Tyrol-Salzburg border region. Reach it from Wörgl via the Schattbach valley in 2.5 hours. The trail climbs steadily through forest, gaining 750m elevation. Alternatively, start from Loferer (north side) and approach via the Loferer Straße pass—a longer route that takes 4 hours but offers open alpine views for much of the way. The hut is positioned at the junction of multiple hiking routes, making it a natural stop on longer traverses of the limestone peaks.

The alm is a traditional working mountain pasture that operates as a summer hut. It has capacity for around 50 guests across dormitory and a few double rooms. Food is simple and hearty: soups, schnitzel, kaiserschmarrn, and locally-sourced dairy products. The kitchen uses milk and dairy from the resident herd. Water comes from mountain springs. There are no hot showers, though you get a basic washroom. The hut stays open June to September, dependent on snow conditions. Opening dates vary—call ahead before planning an early-season visit.

Book direct with the hut operator. Phone ahead in July and August to secure a bed, particularly Friday to Sunday. The hut gets busy with day-hikers during good weather weekends. Wifi is not available. Pay in cash only; there is no card facility.
