It is surrounded by the gentle grassy 'Nocken' that make this range a popular family-hiking area. Rather than a staffed mountain refuge, it is a former alpine farmhouse rented out to one group at a time. The hut has a large parlour with a tiled stove, a well-equipped kitchen with a wood-fired masonry stove and baking oven, hot running water, a washroom with two showers and two toilets, and five bedrooms sleeping two to four people each. Power comes from the hut's own small generating plant, and hot water is solar-heated. Extras include a trout pond, a small bowling alley, a children's playground, board games and an alpine library. It is reached by car: from the Gmünd motorway exit, drive via Eisentratten and about 12 km up the Nöringgraben to the hut, making it an easy, comfortable base for undemanding walks in the Nockberge.
