Wimmer Alm

Wimmer Alm sits at 1,470m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a straightforward base for trails across the Saalach valley. Reach it from Weißbach bei Lofer in Austria—a 2.5-hour walk uphill through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The hut marks a junction point for ridge routes heading toward Hochstaufen (1,771m) and loops through the Untersberg massif. German and Austrian hikers use it as a rest stop on longer mountain days.
The hut is simple and weathered, with capacity for roughly 30 people in dormitory rooms. It serves hot food and drinks during daylight hours, with a basic self-catering kitchen available. Water comes from the spring nearby. The season typically runs May through October, though conditions determine exact opening dates. It's a DAV hut run by volunteers, so expect a working mountain shelter rather than hospitality infrastructure.
