About

Marderebenhütte sits at 2,128m on the northeastern flank of the Schöckl massif in the Seckauer Tauern, roughly 40km southwest of Graz. Reach it from the Pölstal valley via the Pöls alm—allow 3.5 hours from the car park at Pöls. The trail climbs steeply through forest, then opens onto high pasture. In winter, access is only viable from the Seckauer Zinken side (longer approach from the north), as the Pölstal route becomes avalanche terrain.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV, Graz section) and sleeps 30 across dorm rooms. Meals are substantial: expect potato soup, goulash, and fresh bread rather than haute cuisine. The kitchen prepares packed lunches if you order the night before. Water comes from a spring; there's no shower. Opening runs mid-May through September, plus weekends in October if snow hasn't fallen early. Winter mountaineering groups sometimes arrange access outside this window—contact the warden.
Book directly by phone or email at least two weeks ahead for July and August. The hut fills during school holidays in late July. June and September offer reliable weather with far fewer hikers. The warden lives on-site year-round, so emergency access is sometimes possible for winter parties with prior arrangement, though this is never guaranteed.

From the Pöls car park in the Pölstal valley, allow 3.5 hours to reach the hut at 2,128m via steep forest and high pasture; in winter, use the longer approach from Seckauer Zinken to the north.
Expect basic mountain hut fare—soups, stews, schnitzel—plus bed space in shared dorms; bring your own sleeping bag or rent bedding.
The steep 3.5-hour climb and high altitude make it better for hikers with solid fitness; it's well-suited to mountaineers doing alpine routes on the Schöckl massif.
