Reichensteinhütte

Reichensteinhütte sits at 2128m in the Seckauer Tauern range of Styria, anchoring the high plateau between the Seckauer Zinken and Hochreichenstein. Reach it via the Pöls valley approach from Pöls-Oberkurzheim (allow 4–5 hours). The direct route climbs steeply through forest, then opens onto alpine meadow. Most hikers use it as a basecamp for traversing the surrounding peaks or as a stop on longer ridge routes across the Seckauer Tauern. Winter access is unreliable; the hut closes under snow.
The OeAV-managed hut has 60 beds split between dormitory and a few double rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals and packed lunches; self-catering is not possible. Water comes from a spring. Expect basic comfort and a working stove in winter when the guardian is present. The hut operates year-round but staffing is seasonal—phone ahead before a winter visit. Facilities include a drying room.
Book directly through the OeAV at least 4 weeks ahead if you're coming July–August. Weekend slots fill quickly during summer. The hut gets busy mid-July through mid-August; aim for late June or early September for quieter conditions. Email or phone to confirm guardian presence if you're traveling outside the main season.
