Wachlingerhütte

The Wachlingerhütte sits at 1,470m in the Sölk Valley (Sölktal) in Styria, deep in the Sölk Alps. Reach it from the village of Sölk-Bad via the Sölk Valley road—drive as far as the Sölk-Bad parking area, then walk 1.5 hours northeast along the valley floor following the marked trail. The hut works as a base for ridge walks and ascents in the surrounding limestone peaks, particularly toward the Sölkpass (2,091m) and routes into the Niedere Tauern. From here you can access day hikes ranging from gentle valley traverses to 4-5 hour ridge walks with scrambling.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and operates year-round with around 40 beds split between dormitories and a few private rooms. Meals are simple and hearty—expect traditional Austrian fare rather than fine dining. The kitchen provides hot drinks, and you can buy basic supplies. Showers and toilets are basic but functional. Staff are used to self-sufficient hikers and don't overbook, so the atmosphere remains relaxed even in peak season.
Book 2-3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or through the OeAV website. Outside summer, weekday slots usually have availability. The Sölk Valley attracts fewer crowds than busier Styrian valleys, so shoulder season (June and September) offers solid weather windows with fewer people.
