Kemptner Hut

Kemptner Hütte sits at 1,846m in the Allgäu Alps, accessed from the village of Oberstdorf. The main approach follows the Oybach valley for roughly 2.5 hours. The route gains 600m steadily through forest, opening to alpine meadows near the hut. Other approaches exist from nearby valleys—check current conditions locally before departing. The hut works well as a base for day walks or as a stop on longer ridge traverses in the region.
The DAV Sektion Allgäu-Kempten operates the hut year-round. It holds around 40 beds split between small dorms and a few doubles. Half and full board are available; the kitchen handles vegetarian meals on request. Showers function (water comes from mountain springs). No WiFi—leave your phone for the mountains. The hut runs simple but clean: expect radiator heating and basic comfort, not luxury. Summer is busy; shoulder seasons offer quieter nights and fresh snow views on higher peaks.
Book direct by phone with the hut. Call well ahead for July and August—the peak six weeks fill early. May to June and September often have space. Cancellations happen regularly, so phone a few days before if your preferred dates are full. Bring cash; card payment isn't guaranteed. The hut staff speak German primarily but handle English reservations.
