Wiener-Neustädter-Hut

The Wiener-Neustädter-Hütte sits at 2,209m in the Rax-Schneeberg massif, roughly 90km south of Vienna. Reach it from Payerbach-Reichenau station via the Raxbahn cable car (8 minutes), then hike 2 to 2.5 hours on marked trails across the Rax plateau. The final section crosses open terrain with cairn markers. From Reichenau, the walk-up route takes 4 to 5 hours and is steeper but avoids the cable car fee. The hut stands in a bowl below the Heukuppe summit and serves as a hub for ridge walks and traverses across the Rax-Schneeberg range.
The hut offers 60 beds in mixed and separate rooms. The OeTK-managed facility serves a full breakfast buffet and evening meals featuring local specialties. Water comes from a spring and is reliable year-round. The hut has no shower, but a washroom with basins exists. Open year-round, it operates at reduced capacity November to March. Winter access requires avalanche assessment on approach slopes; the cable car closes during heavy snow. Mobile reception is patchy; email works reliably.
Book at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends, and 2 to 3 weeks for shoulder season weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone during opening hours (usually 08:00–20:00). Email reservations are accepted but slower. The hut fills quickly on long weekends in spring and autumn. Arrive by 16:00 unless you've notified them of late arrival.
