About
The Dr. Alexander Brenner Haus sits at 1,565m on the Sengsenalm plateau in the Sengsen Valley, about 30km south of Steyr in Upper Austria. Reach it from the village of Großraming—take the forest road (car or shuttle bus in summer) for 8km to Sengsenalm, then walk 2 hours northeast across open meadows to the hut. Most hikers approach from the north via the Phyrn Pass (1,953m), a 3-hour walk from the pass. The location makes it a solid base for exploring the limestone ridges and moorland around the Sengsenalm.
The hut has 30 beds split across small dorms and a few private rooms. Meals focus on regional Austrian mountain food; book dinner ahead when you book your bed. The hut runs a small bar and stocks basic supplies. Water comes from the mountain, and heating is wood-fired. The OeAV (Austrian Alpine Club) manages the hut. It's open year-round but expect winter conditions from November to April—snow can isolate the plateau, so check access before visiting off-season.
Book at least 4 weeks ahead for summer weekends and school holidays (July-August). Contact the hut directly by phone or email; online booking is limited. July and August are busiest. May-June and September-October offer quieter walking with more reliable weather than the exposed moorland sees in winter.
