Schwandalpe

Schwandalpe sits at 936m in the Vorarlberg Alps, accessible from the Großes Walsertal valley. The approach takes 2 to 2.5 hours from Blons or Thüringerberg, following established hiking trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The hut works as a base for day walks across the Walser high plateau and connects to longer routes toward the Säntis massif. DAV members can reach it year-round on foot; the final approach is straightforward and suitable for hikers with basic mountain fitness.
Schwandalpe is a modest working farm hut run by the DAV. It holds around 25 beds across simple but clean rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare—expect Käsespätzle, bread soups, and local dairy products. The hut operates as a full-service facility during the main season from May through October, though availability outside these months requires direct inquiry. Water comes from a spring on the property. There is no shower, but washing facilities are basic and functional.
Book directly by phone with the hut. Summer weekends fill 4 to 6 weeks ahead, so confirm availability early if you're planning a July or August visit. Arrive with cash in euros—the hut does not process card payments. The nearest vehicle access is Thüringerberg; the final kilometers must be covered on foot.
