Staufner Haus

Staufner Haus sits at 1634m in the Bregenzerwald region of Vorarlberg, south of Bezau. The hut anchors two main approach routes: from Bezau via the Stauff valley (2.5 hours), or from Mellau via Hochälpele (3 hours). Both paths are well-marked hiking routes that gain roughly 700m elevation. The hut works as a base for ridge walks across the Vorarlberg hills and as a stopping point on longer traverses through the region.
The DAV-managed hut sleeps around 30 people in mixed dorm rooms and a few double rooms. Meals focus on simple hearty food—expect schnitzel, spätzle, and vegetable options. The kitchen provides basic self-catering facilities if you bring your own supplies. The hut opens from late April through October; precise dates depend on snow cover and staffing. Expect basic comfort: no wifi, no hot showers in summer (though cold water is available), and pit toilets. This is functional mountain accommodation, not a hotel.
Book directly by phone well ahead. July and August fill fast, especially weekends—aim for 6-8 weeks' notice in peak season. Weekday visits in June or September offer easier availability. The hut's remote location means you cannot walk in unannounced and expect a bed. Confirm opening dates before traveling, as spring snow can delay the season opener.
