About
Cabane de St Roch sits at 1906m in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, on the eastern flank of Mont Pelat. The cabin lies within Parc National du Mercantour, where limestone peaks and steep valleys dominate the landscape. Reach it from the village of Jausiers in the Ubaye valley via the Lauzanier plateau. The approach takes 3.5 to 4 hours on foot, climbing steadily through subalpine pasture and larch forests. Summer snow clears by late June; winter access is unreliable. The cabin serves as a base for scrambles to surrounding 2,500m+ summits and as a waypoint on multi-day traverses across the southern Alps.
The cabin is small and basic, with capacity for around 20 people in dormitory sleeping. It operates seasonally from June to September, with staffing dependent on demand. Water comes from a spring nearby; waste management is pack-out only. The guardian provides simple meals in summer months but cook-it-yourself arrangements can be made outside peak season. Expect outdoor toilet facilities and no electricity or heating. This is true mountain shelter, not a commercial refuge.
Book directly with the cabin guardian via the Parc National du Mercantour visitor centre in Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage or contact the FFCAM section in nearby Barcelonnette. July and August are busy; book 4 weeks ahead for those months. May and September often have space available. Check current access conditions with the park before departure, as weather and snow can block routes until late June.
