Gite le Levant - la Castelle

Gîte le Levant - la Castelle sits at 1,850m in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, serving hikers exploring the Parc National des Écrins and surrounding ridges. The approach takes 2.5–3 hours on foot from the valley. Most routes converge via the Ubaye valley and climbing paths that gain roughly 800–900m elevation. The gîte works as a base for day hikes to neighboring peaks and as a waypoint on longer traverse routes through the high Alpes.
The gîte operates year-round and accommodates 20–30 people in shared dorm rooms. Meals include dinner and breakfast, with packed lunches available. The kitchen is basic but functional. Water comes from reliable mountain sources. Toilets are outdoor or shared indoor facilities. There is no electricity or hot showers—bring a headtorch and expect alpine hostel conditions. The gîte is run as a simple refuge operation, not a hotel.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August. Contact the gîte directly by phone or email; it has no online booking system. The hut is most crowded in July–August and during school holidays. Spring and autumn offer quieter conditions with reliable conditions above 1,500m. Winter access depends on snow and avalanche conditions; confirm open dates with the operator before planning a winter visit.
