Jas de Madame

Jas de Madame sits at 1,130m in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, deep in Parc National des Écrins. Reach it on foot from the Pont de l'Alpe trailhead (allow 2.5–3 hours), following the GR54 variant that ascends through beech forest then alpine meadow. The final approach crosses open terrain with views toward the Pelvoux massif. This is a working shepherd's refuge converted for hikers, set well away from major roads.
The hut has 8 beds arranged in simple dormitory rooms. A caretaker runs the refuge during summer months (mid-June to mid-September), providing basic meals on request—bring cash and book ahead. There is no drinking water on-site; you collect from the spring nearby. Toilets are outside. There are no showers. The hut operates on a self-service basis outside peak season, with sleeping outside or in the basic shelter possible year-round for those prepared to be self-sufficient.
Book meals and confirm occupancy directly with the caretaker as far ahead as possible, particularly for July and August weekends. Access is best June through September when the trail is clear and the caretaker is present. The refuge sits on a popular GR54 section, so expect company during high season. Bring water containers and be prepared for rustic conditions.
