Rifugio Gardetta

Rifugio Gardetta sits at 2,335m in the Marittime Alps on the France-Italy border. The hut is reached via the Val Gesso d'Entracque valley from Boves in Piedmont, Italy, or from the French side via the Col de la Fenêtre de Tenda. Most approach routes take 3-4 hours on foot. The standard Italian approach ascends the mule track from the Valle Gesso, gaining 700m steadily through alpine meadow and scree.
The rifugio is managed by the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) and operates year-round, with reduced facilities outside July-September. It has 30-40 beds in mixed dorms. Half-board stays are standard—the kitchen produces solid mountain food using local ingredients. The hut has electricity and basic hot water. The location works well for walkers tackling the Alpi Marittime ridge or crossing between French and Italian valleys on multi-day itineraries. Winter access requires mountaineering skill and avalanche awareness.
Phone ahead to book, especially for July and August when beds fill weeks in advance. Expect to speak Italian or French. The rifugio prefers direct phone booking over email. Solo hikers can often find space with shorter notice. Confirm access conditions in winter before traveling.
