Rifugio Stroppia

Rifugio Stroppia sits at 2,230m in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, a small hut serving hikers and mountaineers working the ridges and peaks of this remote corner of the southern French Alps. Access is via foot from the valley—expect 4–5 hours from the nearest road. The hut works best as a base for ridge traversals and scrambles rather than as a stopping point on a longer trail.
The rifugio has 12 beds across a handful of rooms. Meals are available if you book ahead; the guardian prepares dinner and breakfast. Water comes from a spring near the hut. Facilities are basic but functional: no shower, no electricity beyond essential lighting. The hut opens seasonally from June to September, depending on snow conditions and the guardian's schedule. Check before planning a visit—this is not a hut you can turn up to without confirmation.
Contact the hut directly by email or phone well ahead of your trip. During July and August, book at least 4–6 weeks in advance. Outside peak season (June, September), 2–3 weeks is usually enough. Phone contact is more reliable than email in the mountains; if you get no response after three attempts, try calling at a different time.
