Shelter de Saint-Jean du Désert

Abri de Saint-Jean du Désert sits at 1245m in the Alpes-Maritimes, deep in the backcountry between the Vallée de la Roya and the upper Gorges du Loup. Access is on foot only. The hut lies roughly 4 hours from Peira Cava (the nearest road head), following marked trails through mixed forest and karst terrain. Winter snow closes the approach reliably between December and April. This shelter serves as a staging point for ascents of Pic de la Cabanette and traverses of the limestone plateaux that dominate this region.
The shelter is small—designed for 4 people maximum—and operates as a basic mountain refuge rather than a staffed hotel. You bring your own food and sleeping bag. There is no electricity, running water, or stove. The hut provides a weatherproof roof, simple bedding, and protection from mountain conditions. Facilities are minimal but adequate for walkers on multi-day routes. The shelter sits open year-round technically, though practical access is May through November only.
Contact the FFCAM Alpes-Azur section directly before attempting a visit. The shelter has no telephone and no warden. Confirm access conditions with local climbing clubs in Nice or Saint-Martin-Vésubie before setting out, as maintenance and reliability vary. Winter visits are possible only for experienced mountaineers with proper equipment and self-rescue capability.
