Refuge de la Madone de Fenestre sits at 1903m in the Alpes-Maritimes, accessed via the Vallée de la Vésubie. From Saint-Martin-Vésubie (980m), the hut is 2 hours hiking on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through beech forest before opening to alpine meadows. The final approach crosses rocky terrain with views toward Mont Bégo. The hut sits at a key junction for routes into the Parc National du Mercantour, making it a natural base for exploring the higher peaks and lakes of the region.
The FFCAM-managed refuge offers 62 beds across multiple dormitory rooms. Meals are provided in full-board format; the kitchen serves hearty evening meals and packed lunches for onward travel. Water comes from a spring near the hut. The refuge operates year-round but is most reliably staffed June to September; winter stays require arrangement in advance. The building is basic mountain infrastructure—expect simple accommodation and no frills, which keeps costs reasonable and the atmosphere focused on hiking rather than comfort.
Book directly by phone with the warden to confirm availability and arrange meals. The hut fills quickly in July and August, especially weekends; phone at least 3 weeks ahead for summer visits. Winter bookings need advance notice. Half-board and full-board options are available depending on your plans and how far you're hiking the next day.
