Rifugio l'Arbergh

Rifugio l'Arbergh sits at 2,100m in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Italian border near the Mercantour massif. The hut is reached via a 4–5 hour hike from the Vallée de la Vésubie, typically starting from Roquebillière or the Boréon valley. The approach is steady rather than technical, making it accessible for fit hikers without climbing experience. In winter, access becomes unreliable due to snow and avalanche risk.
The rifugio sleeps 25 people in simple dormitory rooms. Meals are served daily in season—expect hearty Italian-style cooking rather than French refinement. Water comes from a mountain spring; showers are cold. There is no WiFi, no mobile signal, and no generator noise at night. The hut operates year-round but is most reliably staffed June to September. Winter visits need advance coordination.
Phone ahead to book, especially for July and August weekends when the hut fills fast. Contact the guardian directly rather than expecting online reservation systems—expect to speak Italian or basic English. Arrive before 18:00 to guarantee a hot meal. The hut observes traditional closing times: arrive too late and you may find doors locked. Budget €30–40 for half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast). Payment is cash only.
