About

Chalet de la Têtaz sits at 1,248m in the Fiz valley south of Samoëns, in the Giffre massif of Haute-Savoie. The hut anchors the eastern side of a popular hiking circuit linking several smaller refuges and mountain villages. From Samoëns (the nearest road access), allow 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the chalet on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through mixed forest and pasture. The approach is straightforward but gains around 600m elevation. For mountaineers, the location serves as a staging point for access to Mont Buet (3,096m) and scrambles into the wider Giffre and Chaîne du Ruan ranges.
The halet operates as a simple refuge managed by FFCAM volunteers. It sleeps around 20–25 people in a mix of dormitory and smaller shared rooms. Meals are straightforward: a cooked dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches available on request. Water comes from an on-site source. Facilities are basic—no showers or hot water beyond what the kitchen provides. The hut opens from June through September, with weekends available outside peak summer months depending on volunteer availability.
Book directly with FFCAM Samoëns section ahead of your visit, especially for weekends and July–August. Mid-week slots in June and September are usually easier to secure. The hut operates on a self-catering basis outside the official season if you arrange access with the key holder in advance. Bring a sleeping bag and mat even if beds are provided.
