La Chaz

La Chaz sits at 1,490m in the Haute-Savoie, serving as a base for routes into the Mont-Blanc massif and surrounding peaks. You reach it via the Vallée de Montjoie from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, a valley approach that puts you on foot in under 2 hours from the village. The hut works equally well as a staging point for ascents and as a hiking destination itself—trails branch toward Tête Nord des Dômes, Col de la Forclaz de Montmin, and other cols that connect into the high Alpine network. Winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk.
The hut is open seasonally—typically May to October, though you should confirm dates before planning. It's run by the FFCAM and offers dormitory accommodation with meals prepared on-site. Capacity is modest, around 30 beds. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast; packed lunches are available. Facilities are basic but reliable: water, heating, and a common room. Mobile signal is limited or absent depending on your provider.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the FFCAM directly or check the national hut booking system online. Outside peak season (May–June, September–October) you often have more flexibility, though weather can shift rapidly at this elevation. If the hut is full, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains has hotels and campsites as alternatives.
