About

Refuge Albert 1er sits at 2,704m on the north side of Mont-Blanc massif in Haute-Savoie. The standard approach is from Chamonix via the Mer de Glace and Montenvers railway, then 3–4 hours on foot traversing the glacier and moraine to the hut. Alternative access from the Italian side (Val Veny) takes 4–5 hours. The hut serves as a base for climbing Mont-Blanc via the Trois Monts route and acclimatisation for high-altitude mountaineering. Winter approach requires glacier expertise and rope teams.
The FFCAM-managed refuge accommodates 140 people in dormitory bunks. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard; packed lunches are available. The hut runs a small kitchen and heated common areas. Water comes from snowmelt in summer. The refuge operates late June to early September, depending on glacier conditions and snow cover. Winter closure is firm due to avalanche hazard and access difficulty.
Book directly by phone at least 2–3 months ahead for July and August. The hut fills quickly during the Mont-Blanc climbing season (mid-July to mid-August). May and June weekends can be busy with acclimatisation groups. Email booking is unreliable; phone calls get confirmed responses. Arrive by early afternoon to secure water and meal service. Expect crowding and shared sleeping quarters during peak weeks.
