Refuge Vallot
3.6About
This is not a serviced refuge and cannot be booked. There is no warden, no food, no heating, no running water and no toilets — just a cramped, unheated duralumin box with around 12 places, built in 1938 and renovated in 2006. It exists for one purpose: to give climbers caught by storms, exhaustion or altitude sickness a place to survive on summit day. The managing Club Alpin Français de Saint-Gervais states plainly that it is meant for alpinists in distress, not for planned overnight stays, and that sleeping here without proper acclimatisation is dangerous.
Climbers normally pass Vallot on the way from the Refuge du Goûter (3,835 m) to the summit — about 2.5 hours above the Goûter and roughly 2 hours below the top. The nearby Observatoire Vallot is a separate scientific station, closed to the public.
Access Routes
From Refuge du Goûter (Goûter normal route)
From the Refuge du Goûter (3,835 m), climb over the Dôme du Goûter and descend slightly to the shelter at the foot of the Bosses ridge — glacier travel at extreme altitude, with crevasse and altitude risk. Vallot is an emergency point, not the objective.
Vallot to the summit via the Bosses ridge
From the shelter the route follows the narrow, exposed arête des Bosses to the Mont Blanc summit (4,808 m) — serious exposure and weather risk at 4,300–4,800 m.
