About

Refuge Vallot sits at 4,322m on Mont-Blanc's north face, the highest staffed refuge in the Alps. Access is serious mountaineering only. Most climbers approach from Chamonix via the Goûter route (8–10 hours from the Nid d'Aigle cable car station). The final section involves scrambling over exposed rock and scree above the Grand Couloir. Winter and spring ascents require crampons and ice climbing skills. Summer offers rockier but faster conditions. This is not a hiking destination—it's a mountaineering refuge for Mont-Blanc summit attempts.

The refuge holds 12 beds in a single dormitory room. The warden operates a small kitchen and serves hot meals; bring euros in cash. Water must be melted from snow. The toilet is outside. The hut opens mid-June through mid-September, weather permitting. Altitude sickness hits many climbers; arrive the afternoon before your summit attempt and acclimatise. Nights are cold even in summer. Bring a sleeping bag, warm layers, and a headtorch.

Book through FFCAM or the Club Alpin Français at least 2–3 months ahead for July and August. July and early August are heaviest; June and September have fewer climbers. Contact the warden directly once booked to confirm your arrival time. Expect noise, crowding, and an early 2am wake-up call for summit attempts. This hut exists to get you up Mont-Blanc safely, not for comfort.
