Baraque du Colon

Baraque du Colon sits at 1748m in the Hautes-Alpes, on the eastern flank of the Massif de Dévoluy. Reach it from Superdévoluy village by hiking north through forest and alpine meadow; allow 2.5 to 3 hours. The route is well-marked and moderate in gradient. You can also approach from the Pic de Bure side via a longer, less frequented path. The hut serves as a staging point for ascents of Pic de Bure (2,709m) and traverses across the Dévoluy range.
The refuge offers basic dormitory accommodation for around 30 people, with a guardian present during the main season (late May to late September). Meals are served at lunch and dinner; bring a headtorch and expect minimal amenities. Water comes from a spring nearby. The hut fills quickly on weekends and during school holidays—July and August are especially busy. Most visitors use it as an overnight stop rather than a destination in itself.
Book directly with the guardian if possible, or contact the Syndicat d'Initiative in Superdévoluy for current details. Phone reception is unreliable; email or in-person reservation is more reliable. Aim to book at least a month ahead for weekends in July and August. The hut operates on a first-come-first-served basis outside peak season, though confirming availability beforehand remains prudent.
