Cabin de la Selle

Cabane de la Selle sits at 1998m in the Hautes-Alpes, serving as a base for routes in the southern Écrins massif. Approach from the Vallée du Drac via the hamlet of Fours takes 3–4 hours on foot. The hut lies on the GR54 long-distance trail and offers direct access to peaks around 3000m. The final approach is steep but well-marked.

The cabin holds 10 beds across simple dormitory rooms. Meals are available by advance arrangement, though the hut operates on a self-catering basis—bring your own food unless you've pre-booked with the guardian. Water comes from a spring near the building. The hut is staffed seasonally from June to September, with conditions typically passable April to October. Winter access requires mountaineering experience and equipment.

Contact the guardian directly before your trip to confirm opening dates and arrange evening meals. The cabin fills quickly during July and August, particularly among groups using it as a staging point for Écrins traverses. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer weekends. The hut has no electricity or heating beyond a wood stove. Bring a sleeping bag rated for alpine conditions.
