About
Cabane de Pierre Grosse sits at 2,500m in the Écrins massif, above the Vallouise valley in Hautes-Alpes. The standard approach takes 3–4 hours from Ailefroide village (1,427m), following the GR54 and a marked trail up steep terrain and scree slopes. Snow persists on the upper sections until June. This is a working base for climbers targeting Mont Pelvoux (3,946m) and surrounding peaks, and a waypoint for trekkers on the Tour de l'Écrins circuit.
The refuge is a small, basic mountain hut run by FFCAM, with capacity for around 20 people in dormitory beds. It offers evening meals and breakfast, but you must bring a sleeping bag and be self-sufficient for other meals. Water is available on-site. The hut typically opens from mid-June to mid-September, depending on snow conditions. Winter access is possible but serious and rarely attempted without mountaineering experience.
Book directly with FFCAM Briançon section for July and August visits. The hut fills quickly during summer months—contact them 4–6 weeks ahead for July. Weekends are busier than weekdays. The custodian lives on-site and can advise on climbing conditions and route planning.
