Gite de l'Alpe du Grand Serre

Gite de l'Alpe du Grand Serre sits at 1,950m in the Hautes-Alpes, on the eastern slopes of the Dévoluy massif. Access is from the village of Superdévoluy via a forest track that gains 500m over roughly 2.5 hours on foot. The gite works well as a base for day hikes across the Alpes de Devoluy or as a stopping point on longer traverses between the Champsaur and Valgaudemar valleys. Summer access is straightforward; winter snow closes the road and track for several months.
The gite offers simple mountain hospitality with 30–40 beds in shared and small private rooms. Evening meals are available if booked in advance; breakfast and packed lunches can be arranged. Toilets and hot showers are reliable, though facilities are functional rather than luxurious. The building is FFCAM-affiliated and managed as a walkers' refuge rather than a full Alpine hut. The season runs May through September, with occasional winter weekends if staffed.
Book directly with the gite by phone or email at least a week ahead, especially July and August when school holidays bring families. Mid-week arrivals are easier to accommodate than weekends. The hut is popular with Toulonnais families from Provence and less crowded than classic Mont-Blanc or Écrins huts, making it a practical choice if main refuges are full.
