About
Refuge de la Grotte de la Gittaz sits at 2,387m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, east of Grenoble. Walk in from Col de la Loze (2,260m) in 30 minutes, or take the longer approach from Allevard via the Torrent de la Gittaz valley—allow 4 to 5 hours from the town. The hut serves as a base for climbing Mont Blanc du Chaîne de Belledonne (2,977m) and accessing the high ridges of the massif.
The hut has capacity for 20-25 people in small dormitories. Meals are available with advance notice—cook your own if you prefer, or book half-board. Water comes from the spring; toilet facilities are basic but functional. The season runs June through September, though opening dates depend on snow. Managed by the FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne), the hut is a working refuge, not a hostel.
Book directly with the FFCAM section Isère or the warden via their online system 4 to 6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. July weekends fill consistently. Bring your own sleeping bag—sheets are not provided. The hut has no phone coverage; email is the reliable contact method. Winter access is possible with mountaineering experience, but the hut is not staffed and requires you to arrange access in advance.
