About
Cabane de Féminieu sits at 2,411m in the Massif de la Vanoise, above the Vallée de la Maurienne in Savoie. The hut stands on the north face of Mont Blanc de Cheiron, between Modane and Lanslevillard. Most parties approach from Lanslevillard village (1,550m) via the Plan de la Lay, a steep and exposed route that takes 4–5 hours. The trail is loose and demands care on descent. In winter and spring, avalanche risk closes this approach; only experienced parties with winter skills should attempt it. The alternative approach from Modane (1,057m) via Pas de la Forclaz is longer (6–7 hours) but more stable.
The refuge is a small stone cabin managed by FFCAM, sleeping 12 people in dormitory beds. It has a wood stove for heating and a basic kitchen with a cooker; you bring your own food or arrange meals ahead. Water comes from snowmelt or a stream nearby. The hut is staffed only in summer (late June to late September), with a guardian present July and August. Outside these months it remains unlocked but without services or supplies. There are no toilets beyond a pit outside.
Book direct with FFCAM Modane section or through the FFCAM website well ahead for July and August. For unguarded season visits, check access conditions with local guides or FFCAM before departing. The hut is a true alpine cabin—expect minimal comfort and self-sufficiency. Bring fuel, food, and warm layers regardless of season.
