Les Roches Blanches

Les Roches Blanches sits at 2,450m in the Chaîne de la Vanoise, accessed from the Val d'Isère side. The standard approach starts from Le Forclaz de Montmin (1,461m) and takes 4–5 hours, following well-marked trails through alpine meadows and scree. In winter and early spring, this route requires crampons and an ice axe. The hut can also be reached from Refuge du Lacs Merlet via a 2–3 hour scramble over loose terrain—scout the line carefully. Most parties arrive with legs tired and oxygen depleted; the altitude gain is genuine.
The hut is a FFCAM refuge with 40 places in shared dormitories. Meals are available (book dinner when you reserve); the kitchen serves hearty evening soup, a main course, and breakfast. Water is sourced from a spring nearby. There are no showers. The hut runs from June through September, with limited availability during peak season. The views across the Vanoise massif justify the effort, and from here you can access Les Fours (2,921m), Mont Pourri (3,779m), or traverse toward Refuge de l'Iseran over multiple days.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August, longer for French school holidays. Contact the hut directly or reserve through the FFCAM website. Expect to share your dormitory; bring earplugs. The refuge manager can advise on conditions and snow patches if you call ahead.
