Rifugio Luigi Vaccarone

Rifugio Luigi Vaccarone sits at 2,747m on the border between Savoie and Italy, in the high granite terrain between Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso. Reach it from Écrins valley via the Dora di Valnontey—a long approach of roughly 5–6 hours from the roadhead at Pont. The route climbs steeply through larch forest and alpine meadow, then traverses rocky terrain to the hut. Most hikers break this approach into two days using lower valley refuges. Summer access is straightforward; winter and early spring require glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills.
The hut operates year-round with 15 beds split across small rooms. Showers are available. Meals are served in Italian style—expect hearty polenta, pasta, and stews. Booking in advance is essential even outside summer, as the hut fills regularly with parties doing Gran Paradiso traverses and alpine mountaineering courses. The hut is staffed by the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano), which manages it as a base for technical rock and mixed climbing in the surrounding granite basins.
