Alpe Hohenegg
2.4About
The alp operates as a simple working dairy farm with basic overnight accommodation for 15–20 guests in shared rooms. The kitchen serves traditional Vorarlberg food: käsespätzle, bread, alpine cheese, and milk from the herd. You'll find a small restaurant area but no shower or electricity. Water comes from the spring. The hut runs year-round, though services thin out significantly from November to April. Winter access requires sturdy boots and avalanche awareness; the route isn't maintained. Summer sees regular foot traffic from families and mountain bikers using the forest roads below.
Book directly with the farming family one week ahead in July and August. Outside peak season, turn up or phone ahead. The hut doesn't accept credit cards—bring cash (euros). No public transport reaches Mellau or Schönenbach; a car or local taxi gets you to the trailhead. This is a working farm first, a hut second—expect rustic conditions and genuine hospitality, not alpine-hut infrastructure.
