Kemptener Naturfreundehaus

Kemptener Naturfreundehaus sits at 1,416m in the Allgäuer Alps, a quieter corner of the German Alpine range between Kempten and the Austrian border. The hut is accessible from Kempten town via the Iller valley. Most hikers approach from Söllereck (1,706m) or from the village of Wertach on foot—the walk from Wertach takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours across moderate terrain. Winter access is possible but snow conditions vary; check ahead if visiting November to March.

The hut holds 70 beds across mixed dormitory and private rooms. It serves as a base for day hikes across the Allgäuer Alps, with routes to peaks like Hochvogel (2,592m) and ridgelines above the Oberallgäu. Meals focus on traditional Bavarian fare. The hut operates year-round, though staffing may be reduced in shoulder seasons. Facilities include a dining room, a simple bar, and washing areas; don't expect luxury. It's run by the Naturfreunde (a hiking-oriented club affiliated with the broader German hiking movement), so the atmosphere is practical and hiker-focused rather than resort-like.
