Obere Ochsenalpe

Obere Ochsenalpe sits at 2,050m in the Zillertal, a straightforward base for ridge walks and valley traverses in the central Zillertal Alps. Reach it from Mayrhofen by hiking up the Zillertal side valleys or from Finkenberg via the Zillertal ridge routes. Most approaches take 3–4 hours from valley parking. The hut is also accessible as a day walk from lower huts in the Zillertal system, making it useful for multi-day tours linking the valley's hut network.

The hut offers basic dormitory accommodation with around 40 beds and serves hot meals from a simple kitchen. Water comes from a spring on the alp. The hut operates seasonally, typically June to September, with the shoulder months often less crowded than mid-July and August. Staff can advise on weather conditions and route conditions for onward hiking. Expect traditional Austrian Alpine hut standards: warm food, cold showers, and no electricity in rooms.

The hut fills quickly during the main season as it connects several popular multi-day routes. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a bed for dinner. The hut does not accept online bookings through third-party platforms.
