Hündleskopfhütte

Hündleskopfhütte sits at 1,180m in the Ammergau Alps, a quieter corner of the Bavarian Alps south of Oberammergau. Reach it from Unterammergau in about 2 hours on foot—the trail climbs steadily through beech forest, gaining roughly 500m elevation. The hut marks the midpoint for several valley traverses and works well as a base for day walks around the Schönbrunn valley. Winter access is possible but depends on snow conditions.
The hut is run by the DAV and holds around 50 beds in simple dormitories. The kitchen serves hearty evening meals and breakfast; bring your own lunch or buy basics at the small shop. Water comes from a spring. Toilets are basic but clean. The hut opens year-round, though winter facilities are limited and you should check conditions before heading up in snow.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for weekends and July–August. Contact the hut directly by email or phone to reserve beds. Phone ahead in winter to confirm the hut is staffed. Expect it to be busy on Sundays and during school holidays. Weekday visits in May and June offer quieter conditions and reliable weather.
