Kesselalm

Kesselalm sits at 1,278m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessed from the village of Schönau an der Königssee. The approach takes 2.5 hours on foot from Königssee village, following a well-marked trail through mixed forest that gains 400m elevation steadily. The hut works as a base for day hikes into the surrounding limestone peaks and connects to routes toward the Funtensee and higher alpine terrain.
The hut holds 20 beds across simple rooms. Half-board (bed, breakfast, dinner) is standard; the kitchen serves hearty Bavarian fare focused on local produce. No running water at the hut—expect the traditional mountain experience. Kesselalm opens May through October, closing during heavy snow. Facilities are basic: cold-water washing, composting toilet, and a small common room with a wood stove. The hut operates year-round as a DAV-registered alpine hut, staffed by a caretaker.
Phone ahead to check availability and book beds, especially for weekends and July-August. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and autumn weekends. Mid-week visits in June and September offer the best chance of walk-up availability. Pay in cash on arrival—bring small notes. The caretaker can advise on current trail conditions and route options into the Berchtesgaden range.
