Schönauer Alm

Schönauer Alm sits at 1,520m in the Benediktbeurer Alpen, accessible from the village of Bad Heilbrunn or from Schöpfing via the Schöpf Valley. The hut makes a natural base for the Benediktbeurer range and the approach to Benediktenwand (1,801m). From Bad Heilbrunn the walk takes roughly 2.5 hours through steady forest and alpine meadow. The route is well-marked and straightforward, though the final approach steepens noticeably. Winter access depends on snow conditions and trail preparation—check current conditions before heading out.
The DAV-managed hut has capacity for around 30 guests in simple shared and double rooms. Meals focus on Bavarian standards: hearty dinners, substantial breakfasts, and packed lunches for onward routes. The kitchen produces food for walkers with reasonable notice. Water comes from the hut's own spring. Toilets and washrooms are basic but reliable. The hut opens year-round but operates with reduced staff in winter—contact ahead if planning November through March visits.
Book direct by phone or email 6–8 weeks ahead for weekends and July–August. The hut is quietest mid-week outside summer. Phone ahead if you plan a winter visit: access can be unpredictable and the hut may close for a week or more depending on snow and staffing. Advance payment is typically required to confirm a reservation.
