About
The Winklmoosalm sits at 1,160m in the Chiemgau Alps between the Winklmoosalp and the Hochries massif. Reach it from Ruhpolding via the Winklmoosalp road (12km drive), then hike 1.5 hours on marked trails through alpine meadows. Alternatively, start from Übersee-Feldwies and walk 2 hours. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks toward the Hochries (1,569m) and access to the Chiemgau ridge traverse. Good trails link onward to Rauschberg and the Stöhralm.
The DAV operates this as a self-catering refuge (Selbstversorgerhütte), so bring your own food and cook in the communal kitchen. The hut has around 40 beds in mixed dormitories. Hot showers and heating are available. Staffed seasonally from May through October, though the hut can be used year-round by self-sufficient groups who book the entire building. Winter access requires good snow experience and appropriate gear. The location suits families and groups wanting flexible cooking rather than set mealtimes. Mattresses, blankets and pillows are provided.
Book direct with DAV Sektion München und Oberland. Contact details and availability are on the DAV website. July and August fill quickly; reserve 8–10 weeks ahead for peak season. The hut works well in shoulder months (May, June, September, October) when crowds thin and the Chiemgau meadows are still green. Winter bookings require the full group to commit.
