Hochrieshütte

Hochrieshütte sits at 1,569m on the Hochries in the Chiemgau Alps, east of Rosenheim. Reach it from Grainau in the Prien Valley—the standard route climbs 800m in roughly 3.5 hours through mixed forest and Alpine meadow. The Hochries ridge walk makes for strong day-hikes in either direction, with views across the Chiemgau toward the Berchtesgaden massif on clear days.
This DAV-managed hut holds 37 beds spread across simple dormitories and a few smaller rooms. The kitchen serves hearty evening meals and breakfast; you can order packed lunches the night before. There's no WiFi, so plan accordingly. The hut runs year-round but is quietest October through April. Water comes from a spring; the outhouse situation is basic but reliable. Expect solid mountain hospitality rather than comfort—it's a walker's hut, not a hotel.

May through September sees the heaviest traffic. Winter visitors need to check snow conditions before arriving; the ridge can be dicey in poor weather.
