Stöcklalm

Stöcklalm sits at 1,532m in the Chiemgau Alps above the village of Sachrang, roughly 80km southeast of Munich. Reach it from Sachrang in 1.5 hours on foot. The trail climbs steadily through mixed forest and pasture, gaining 600m elevation. In summer you can drive partway up a rough forest road to shorten the walk to 45 minutes, though a vehicle with high clearance helps. The hut is ideally positioned for day walks across the Chiemgau: Hochries and Hochgern are both reachable in 2–3 hours.
Stöcklalm is a traditional Bavarian mountain farm-hut run by the DAV, with bed capacity around 30 across shared rooms. The kitchen serves solid alpine fare—hearty soups, schnitzel, käsespätzle—with vegetarian options. Water comes from the mountain, and there's a small shop for snacks and basic supplies. No WiFi, so you'll actually talk to other hikers. The hut opens mid-May and closes by late October, depending on snow. In winter it's occasionally staffed for ski touring groups, but confirm ahead.
Book directly with the hut 3–4 weeks ahead for weekends. Peak periods are July, August, and September weekends, when beds fill quickly. Weekday slots open up more easily. The hut can accommodate larger groups if you arrange in advance. Cash payment is preferred; check current contact details on the DAV website as numbers change seasonally.
