About

Brunnsteinhütte sits at 1560m on the northwestern flank of the Wetterstein range near Mittenwald. The hut is a solid base for exploring this limestone massif and the Isar valley below. Reach it in 2–2.5 hours from Mittenwald village by hiking the marked path up Schöngeigers Alm. The trail gains 800m and is steep in sections but well-maintained. Most hikers approach from Krün or Bad Kohlgrub if coming from further afield. The location works equally well as a staging point for ascents into the higher Wetterstein or as a rest stop on longer Karwendel traverses.
The hut sleeps around 50 guests in mixed and smaller rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Bavarian food at lunch and dinner; self-catering is not possible. Water comes from a natural spring. There is no electricity or phone signal on-site. The hut operates year-round but conditions are best May through October. Winter access requires mountaineering experience and proper equipment. The DAV Sektion Mittenwald maintains the building and manages bookings directly.
Contact the hut by email to reserve beds. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Weekday slots and shoulder seasons (May, June, September) are easier to secure with 2–3 weeks' notice. The hut fills quickly during Bavarian school holidays. Solo hikers can usually find space on short notice, though dormitory beds are shared. Day visitors are welcome if beds permit; bring your own plates and cutlery.
